Tom and Olga were married in the beautiful Town Hall in Rye on the south coast of England and their fun-filled, anglo-russian reception took place at the Gallivant Hotel just a couple of miles away in Camber Sands.
Their wedding photographer David Long kindly agreed to allow me to second shoot their wedding entirely on film. I often shoot a few rolls at my own weddings, but I’d never shot a whole wedding on film from beginning to end and I was curious to find out what it would be like… could I manage loading and storing my film, metering for every shot and still capture those fleeting moments I pride myself on seeking and recording?
Well, it wasn’t easy. David will tell you there were times when I was seriously frustrated trying to keep up with the fast-paced nature of a wedding day without my speedy autofocus and rapid fire shutter! But, once I got into the swing of things I stopped worrying about what I was missing. I started to work harder to anticipate the moments I wanted to capture further in advance and began to really enjoy the slow-paced, calmer approach.
It was a challenge and a pleasure to shoot this wedding entirely on film and I don’t mind saying I’m pretty chuffed with the results…
