Definitely my favourite picture, because it has cakes in it.  Jeans feel tight just looking at these cakes in the window of ‘Loafing’ on Lauriston Road… sheer scrumptiousness!  : )

Photographs I Love | Unsafe Journey

Originally from Stockholm, Amy Helene Johansson is a photojournalist now living in Dhaka, Bangladesh.  Trained as a fashion designer Johansson spent ten years working for H&M, before a workshop with world renowned photographer Steve McCurry changed her life.  Photography became her passion and she never looked back.

She describes the moment she took this photograph as one of her happiest… “riding on the roof of a train with thousands of excited Bangladeshis going home to celebrate the Eid festival. Cheesy tunes on cheap transistor radios and wind blowing in my hair, I leaned over the edge of the train to take the picture that finished in the finals of the National Geographic photography competition 2010.

The digital revolution in photography over the past decade has made photography a lot less expensive, a lot less intimidating and a lot more accessible.  Beginner’s can afford to experiment; taking hundreds of pictures and learning from each one to improve their skills bit by bit.

The woman who took this photograph is a self taught photographer and her’s is a story of great success.  She is one of thousands of women who, in the last ten years, has picked up a camera and found it difficult to put it down again.  So girls, be inspired!  There’s a great big beautiful world out there just waiting to be captured.

Why have an Engagement Shoot?

This is a question I get asked a LOT, so I thought I’d post a few of my ideas on why a pre-wedding or engagement shoot is a good idea…

I always offer my couples a complimentary engagement shoot with every wedding package.  This is because I firmly believe having this opportunity to get to know my clients better, build on my relationship with them and gain an understanding of how they react to the camera, helps me take better photographs of their big day.

Pre-wedding shoots are also a great opportunity for the bride and groom-to-be to see how their photographer works, so that when their wedding day comes around they can relax knowing exactly what to expect.

Photographers have different approaches to capturing your memories… some are very involved and give specific directions to their subjects, others prefer to take more of a back seat and let the emotion speak for itself and many are a combination of both.  Your experience on your engagement shoot will be a good indicator of your photographer’s preferred approach.

The advantage of this is, as a client, you can let your photographer know if there are any specific compositions or angles you do not care for, or any which you love.  Communication is key and all this information helps your photographer deliver images of your wedding day which you will love.
