Film | Queen of the Hebrides

Islay is little known to many but well known to few.  Lured by the amber nectar from the island’s eight distilleries, whisky lovers travel from far and wide to sample a wee dram of of Islay’s distinctive scotch.  Indeed it was this peaty poison which originally drew my young man to Islay, but there is a lot more to this island than whisky.

First, there’s the journey.  Islay is a long way from most places, and there’s no easy way to drive there.  We traveled north in black and white from Cheshire to Glasgow, along Loch Lomond…

…and down the western edge of Loch Fyne to Inveraray…

That was day one.  Day two began long before dawn.  We boarded the Kennacraig ferry in colour…

…and docked at sunny Port Askaig at lunchtime.  It was a tiring 36 hour journey, but I’m very glad not to have taken the easy option and hopped on a plane, because each mile added to the sense of isolation which made the destination all the more magical.

Flora on Film

For most summertime means relaxing holidays in the sun, weekend barbeques and long lazy evenings, but when you photograph families and weddings for a living, summer can be pretty hectic.  That’s not to say it’s not good, it’s just, well, busy!  So in many ways winter has become my new summer; a chance to catch my breath, evaluate the year behind me and make plans for the year ahead.

It’s also a great time for shooting more personal work and getting together with fellow photographers for a good chin wag!  With this in mind, I signed up to attend a Winter Wonderland photo shoot last December.  Sponsored by Aspire and organised by Claudia Rose Carter, the shoot took place in and around Battersea Park, London.  This is my favourite picture from the day…

Aspire | A Review

Last September I attended a wedding photography workshop at Aspire.  Set in the beautiful rolling hills of Cumbria and run by the fabulous Catherine Connor, Aspire was established as a unique photography training business, helping aspiring photographers to achieve their individual goals and make their business a success.

When I signed up for the course, I was just coming to the end of my first full season of wedding photography and felt the need to take things up a gear.  I had experience, but I needed to professionalise.  I needed to take stock and look at my business and Aspire was the perfect retreat – an opportunity to getaway from the day to day grind and reflect on my business goals, my brand and my own personal aspirations.  With expert advice from Catherine, seasoned wedding photographer Stuart Cooper and the whole Aspire team, it is hard not to come away feeling invigorated and full of ideas to move your business forward.

Plus (and this is important) the feasts we were served each lunchtime were seriously scrumptious!

It was also a great opportunity to spend some more quality time with my Contax…

Stuart Cooper - Hey Victoria These images look beautiful, so pleased you have blogged them. I love the ones you did at the lakes – I guess if your traveling to the lake district it would be a shame not to!!!

I hope all is well and love the new website X

Sarah - love love love the one of the wooden pier slats – it makes me think instantly of running down the pier and jumping into that water (which you know I’d have been unable to resist had I been there with you!) :o) xx

Engagement | Freezing February

winter engagement photography

It was a cold, frosty morning and the sky was white.  I met Laura and Dave near Bickerton and the four of us (including their gorgeous dog Jess!) went for a walk up the hills.  Visibility wasn’t brilliant but what we could see was beautiful.  Every branch on every tree was laden with a thick layer of ice and as the wind rustled through the frozen branches it was as though the woods were making music.  We’d never known anything like it.
