A Natural Approach to Newborn Photography

Natural newborn photography by film family photographer Victoria Phipps

My approach to photographing newborns is a little different to the posed portraits that probably spring to mind for most people. It is actually amazing how malleable newborns are in those first few weeks of life and you can shape them into some seriously cute positions, but I’ll hold my hands up and say I am not great at this! There are a lot of very talented newborn photographers out there who excel at this style of portraiture, but it’s not my forte. I tried with my own two with some hilarious results!

So what can you expect from a newborn family photo session with me? Well… no crazy poses and no dressing up. My photographs are all about honest story-telling. I want to capture your family exactly as you are as you embark on this new chapter together. I’ll photograph you in your home, because that’s where life happens with a newborn. If that home reflects the inevitable whirlwind of chaos and adjustment then so be it, because it’s also where the love and devotion to this tiny human is building day by day.

It’s all in the details. I want to capture those tiny fingers and toes, that mouth-wide-open sleepy expression on baby’s face when they feel utterly safe napping in Mum’s arms, those flailing limbs which translate into excited fist pumps and those first smiles which bring so much joy and melt the hearts of sleep-deprived parents!

I know from experience that the first weeks with a newborn can feel like an eternity at the time. But whilst the days are long, the years are short and this time will pass all too quickly. Recording these beautiful and fleeting details with Mum and Dad in the frame is so important to keep these moments safely preserved in time.

I say it again and again, photographs become all the more precious with the passage of time. By investing in photography to record this fleeting moment in your family’s journey not only are you banking memories which will appreciate in value year on year, you are also creating a beautiful gift to pass on to your children. They won’t remember this chapter of their lives as you will, but whenever they look at these photographs they’ll be in no doubt of how much they were wanted and loved.

It’s my job to capture your memories honestly and beautifully, so they can be revisited and shared for years and even generations to come. So if you have a baby on the way and are looking for newborn photographs which capture your unique story then I’m your girl and I’d love to hear from you!
